This day is also called Vinayak Chaturthi or Ganesh Chaturthi. It is the day that Lord Ganesh was born. Lord Ganesh is the god of prosperity, and every morning, prayers are said to him in homes all over the world.
In many cities across India, devotees walk through the streets chanting prayers while standing in front of statues of gods. The prasad includes Lord Ganesh's favourite food, Modak.
After 10 days, the festival is over and the idols are thrown into the sea, because it is thought that Ganesh goes to Mount Kailash to see Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
