Shobana was born in Thiruvananthapuram, India, on March 21, 1970, to parents Chandrakumar Pillai and Anandam Chandrakumar.

She is related to the well-known Indian dancers and actresses Lalitha, Padmini, and Ragini, who are known as the Travancore sisters. The actress Sukumari was the sister of her father. Her cousin is Malayalam superstar Ambika Sukumaran. His cousins Vineeth and Krishna are both actors in the Malayalam language. Ananthanarayani is the name of the girl they raised as their own.

The novels Rudraveena (1988), Abhinandana (1988), Thalapathi (1991), and Manichitrathazhu (1992) are among her best. She is a skilled Bharatanatyam dancer and opened her own dance school in 1994. In 2006, the Government of India gave her the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors.
